It starts in 1974. A young woman moves into her first apartment, her first Golf parked outside. The film follows her across fifty years: a day at the beach, a first date, the passenger seat on long drives, teaching her daughter how to drive. When her daughter finally moves out, she hands her the new Golf. Made by life. Made for life.
We built the campaign around that handover. Not a timeline of the car’s technical evolution, but a timeline of a life lived alongside it. Five generations of drivers. Naps in the back seat. Songs in the front. Last miles and first ones.
“Working on a Volkswagen brief is always a source of pride here,” said our CCO Alexander Kalchev. “For this campaign we tried to capture the essence of the Golf’s 50-year history to tell a universal, human story.” Directed by Terence Neale, the film ran across TV, digital and social in Europe, and also served as the campaign for Mother’s Day. LBBOnline called it a reminder that “the Golf has empowered generation after generation of drivers.”
Fifty years after its launch, the Golf remains the bestselling car in European history. The campaign didn’t need to prove that. It just needed to make you feel it.
